Primary Retreat

With the advent of remote work, finding time for yourself at home has become more difficult than ever. For this interior design project, our client was looking to re-imagine their primary bedroom and transform it into a retreat.

This couple was looking for a cozy and restful sanctuary that could provide respite from work and the busyness of life. Interestingly, this room is also part photography studio, boasting the perfect light needed for flat lays and product shoots for our client, a part-time photographer. This unique situation added another layer to the needs of the space. Even when you love what you do, work equipment all over can create a cluttered, stressful feeling, so we needed to ensure there was plenty of storage to tuck away items in plain sight, while also remaining accessible.

The room also needed a focal point, which the right fabric and wallpaper can easily deliver. This primary retreat belongs to two talented artists who wanted to infuse their own personality in the space via their own media, paint and film; those items needed to relate and not detract from the design of the space.

As we dove into this project, we aimed to bring clean, calming and soothing colors; no fussy lines or styles. This client desired something timeless, that really works with showcasing their art. The design needed to enhance and draw the eye to the art, not compete with it. To accomplish this, we focused on low profile furniture, unique lighting options, and pleasing asymmetry.

Like the majority of our projects, it all started with wallpaper. The clients fell in love with a contemporary and unique geometric brad style wallpaper, in the perfect neutral taupe with a hint of metallic shimmer. Not too masculine or feminine, it lent a breezy, casual feeling to the space that allowed us to draw attention to the gorgeous black and white photography featured on the walls. We layered the wallpaper with a casual, always cool white linen on the bed and other accents like gauzy white window treatments, which add a layer of texture and softness, drawing the eye to their recently remodeled outdoor space.

We take pride in transforming a space into a sanctuary. The window treatments, double layered roman shades with perfect folds, changed the room in a heartbeat. We utilized translucent white linen with an Asian geometric shape embroidered on top in shimmering velvet. Both casual and serious at the same time, sweet and salty. The pattern on the fabric subtly enhanced the wallpaper, rather than fighting with it.

As always, we couldn't do what we do without the great tools and resources at our disposal. Thibaut wallpaper is among our favorites to work with; lots of gorgeous colors, patterns and textures at a great price point. There’s always something for everyone in a Thibaut wallpaper book! For lighting, we took care to add pendant lights from Hudson Valley for an inviting glow. The bench from CB2 brought a combination of functionality and form to this new retreat. Additionally, Maxwell makes fabulous fabric, with unique patterns, that brought out the beauty in this space.

We hope you enjoyed this look at our process, and look forward to working with you soon.

XOX, Heidi
