Heart of the Home

One of the most exciting types of design projects for us is when a client starts fresh with a new space.

This particular client purchased a new-to-them home, and we set off on a journey to reimagine it! The space was in pretty good shape to begin with, but its style leaned toward safe and generic, and this client wanted something fresh and personal. When they moved in, the majority of the home was builder's grade, with a few cute touches, such as a shiplap wall and a barn door. It needed more!

For this space, our client was looking for a clean, unfussy aesthetic, curated with meaningful pieces. A mix of modern and heirloom.

To achieve the client's dream look, we wanted to concentrate on timeless materials and quality pieces that would provide them with a beautiful foundation to build on over the coming years.

Family Room

In the family room, we loved the touch of shiplap, but really wanted to punch it up a notch. Shiplap is traditionally found in ‘farmhouse’ style homes, which was not the look they wanted. We knew that painted the right color, the shiplap paneling could become a modern architectural feature on a focal wall — no farmhouse in sight. Landing on a gorgeous saturated hue in the blue/green family was part of modernizing the paneling on the focal wall and transforming the room. This rich blue/green (“Stillwater” by Sherwin Williams) was perfect for repeating throughout the home on cabinets and doors. Calming yet bold, focused in key areas, and sprinkled throughout the home for cohesion; color and texture make all the difference!

Also in the family room, we are thrilled with how the fireplace turned out, as there was no fireplace in the home when they purchased it!

A focal point for this open-plan home is the custom mantel and floating wood shelves, highlighted by the vintage style wall sconces, which pop against the saturated and moody hue on the wall.

The stacked stone, which the client was keen on, has all the right undertones and coordinates with the new, wide-plank flooring. The fireplace material really layers the color and texture in the space.

Kitchen

The aegean blue/green was pulled into the kitchen with handcrafted, textural subway tile. We chose a modern installation pattern to lend the unique material an heirloom sensibility. Additionally, the soft beige cabinets balance the space with the great room focal wall.

With its location in the center of the kitchen, the pantry door was an opportunity for a surprising focal point, so we gave it a pop of color that coordinates with the wall paneling across the open-concept room.

Velvet is remarkably easy to clean, so it was an obvious choice for chair upholstery, to give the dining area a luxury feel, while also being practical for a family with children.

Bathrooms

To continue the accent color throughout the home, we pulled a softer blue/green hue into the guest bathroom via the subway tile, coordinating beautifully with “Stillwater” which we applied to update existing cabinetry.

In the primary bathroom, a light and fresh, classic feel is achieved by incorporating a marble-look porcelain tile in a modern diamond shape, and continuing the color and feel with a marble-look porcelain penny tile. This ensures the space has an uninterrupted visual flow.

The rustic handcrafted subway tile nods to the kitchen backsplash, but is a clean white finish. We removed the giant garden tub that was eating up a ton of valuable floor space for a more modern freestanding tub. Centering this new tub under the windows gave the homeowners a much larger shower with a bench, built-in niches for all their shower products, and two shower heads (including a handheld).

Spacious, functional, beautiful, and modern with a classic touch. This can really be felt in the vintage style vanity fixtures paired with black metal mirrors.

To complete the tile portion of this incredible build, we were thrilled to patronize the Tile Shop and Arizona Tile. On the paint front we made use of reliable Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams. Lastly, we used Shades of Light who has an excellent selection of really cool light fixtures, and Rove Concepts who provided the velvet chairs, to bring about that timeless feel.
